There are two skaters ahead of him in points now (Oda and Joubert). It is very likely that the top two spots at Skate America will go to Lysacek and Verner (there is very weak competition in the men's category there) and they will both end up with more points than Johnny and make the GPF. That leaves two GPF spots still open.
So it comes down to Skate Canada - Chan is the likeliest winner there but can't go to the GPF because he is only competing at one event. So it all depends on how well Takahashi, Brezina and Abbott skate at SC; Abbott would have to win gold in order to go ahead of Johnny (not impossible but unlikely), so that leaves Brezina and Takahashi competing with Johnny for the last two spots.
Takahashi can beat Johnny if he wins gold or if he wins silver with a higher score total than Johnny achieved in his two events, and Brezina can go ahead of Johnny if he wins gold or silver, or if he takes the bronze and has a higher score total than Johnny. If they both manage those places, Johnny will not make the Final. But if either of them misses the podium at SC, Johnny goes to the GPF.
