Ensure?? My 83 year old father has to drink 2 or 3 a day because he's underweight--he doesn't have a good appetite. But he's in a wheelchair and
doesn't get much exercise. Can't Johnny just eat? Isn't that the best way to get nutrition? I wonder if other athletes drink that as well.

Now he is just eating a salad (feeling a bit like a stalker here). Can someone please feed the guy with decent food?

{sigh} I guess Ensure and salad is a slight improvement over last year when the only thing he had all day was Starbucks.

IIRC, last year Johnny said he wouldn't eat anything but coffee all day, but then had a "small piece of meat" and a vegetable for dinner.
I'm not sure if this Ensure in the morning and salad at night diet is better or worse............ Pippa

Eating and drinking stuff like that makes Johnny kind a bad representative for that campaign against child obesity... maybe he's campaigning for anorexia
or eating disorders...?
Somebody please tell that child that being skinny NO MATTER WHAT is all sorts of wrong. |

I kind of feel torn on this one. The med-student and, well, responsible person in me says: Eat something decent three times a day. (and Johnny keeps talking
about food, his figure, his weight - never a good sign)
But then again; what do I know about how gymnasts / skaters / dancers have to eat? Meissner recently said that she eats like a rabbit, too. On the other hand, Lambiel is known for being a good eater and weighing about 65 to 66kg at 175cm (which is low, but not as low as Johnny) - and still landing his jumps etc. Joubert has a really athletic figure with 74kg at 178cm. I know that everyone is different, different metabolism, different technique on jumps - but there has to be a way to live a healthy life and still being successful in your sport. It must be something with figure skaters....do you all remember Janet Lynn? Well, back in her day, I remember reading about her (she had a bit of a weight
struggle) and during a practice she took a lunch break to eat the following: diet (no sugar) jello and mushrooms. Not together, I hope. The comment was that
was all the calories she could afford to take in. I remember thinking "yuck". No wonder Johnny was wishing for pizza and chicken fingers. Sounds like
he's had plenty of greens!

I'm still puzzled. Chicken meat is one of the healtiest kinds of meat, and fish is also light but great for your health. They would give the energy Johnny
needs. No wonder he is tired.

brigichan wrote: Me, too. It just doesn't seem right to not eat a healthy, balanced, low-fat diet. Lean mean, vegetables, whole grains...yadda, yadda. It's a little bit of work, I admit, because you have to shop and and plan and do your own cooking, etc., and then there's all the eating out that Johnny is faced with when he travels. It's difficult (and a bit dreary) to maintain the diet. But I suppose the Ensure is there for him in case he cannot afford the time to get the healthy meal in him. However, I've never heard of anyone drinking that stuff who isn't old or ill.

My mom (such a good Jewish mom, lol) use to always tell me that if you don't eat right, your body won't be able to fight off illness, that's my concern with Johnny's diet. I don't want him to have another season of illnesses like last year.

The thing is, it seems Johnny never learns from past illnesses. He writes in almost every twitter entry how tired he is. No wonder! He is not eating right.
I'm far from being a nutritionist or sports expert, but how many calories can he burn on a single day of training? If the rumors are true about
Galina's stern coaching, I'd say way above 1000 kcals. That amount should be produced with some kind of food, + a little extra to have some remaining
energy for the rest of the day. But with the tidbits he shares about his diet, I'd be surprised if he'd eat half of that amount, to be honest...

momjudi wrote:Your Mum is of course totally right (Mums are always right; I even have a list for every time my Mum turned out to be right) - there is a lot of scientific proof for that. Studies proved e.g. if you are a woman, middle-aged and older, you actually live longer if you are slightly overweight (5 to 15kg over normal weight). Because the benefits of having some reserves outweigh the benefits of having very low blood lipids etc. Got some examples. A Spanish study from 1999 about female ballet dancers. Both a negative energy balance and physical exertion have been shown to induce immunological changes which have been implicated as a possible explanation for increased susceptibility to illness and infections. [...] Leukocytes, lymphocytes and all lymphocyte subset counts were lower in ballet dancers in comparison with controls. [...] The nutritional requirements for this population should be increased in order to compensate their high-energy expenditure, avoid a negative energy balance and lessen the nutritional damage. This is a rather long paper about nutritional guidelines for athletes. Really interesting. I had no idea it's that complicated. Connaitre, ce n'est point demontrer, ni expliquer. C'est acceder a la vision. -- Antoine de Saint-Exupery |

We all have a bit of "Jewish mother" in us, I guess, as I read all our fussing over his diet (although in my case, Irish-Catholic which is basically
the same thing!). I can only hope the "Ukranian" mother in Galina knows what she's doing in regards to his diet. Right now I'm making
granola...it's so good for you, full of oats, flaxseed meal, walnuts and I add dried cherries to it for a little zing. I'm tempted to box it up and
send it to him.

Today's tweet, Johnny is shopping in the city, gettting a pedicure and manicure and then having what he calls a light supper - probably another salad.

I think the fashionista and the athlete war in Johnny. The athlete wants to be strong and have endurance but the fashionista says it is better to look good
than to feel good. Seriously though, he may not list everything he eats in a day in an offhand remark on twitter or in an interview.

I actually googled it and found it could mean going out and getting drunk or going out and doing uncool things but maybe it just means going out.

Thanks for the explanation, momjudi.
I love Johnny's Twitter, but he seems to write a lot as if everyone already knows who the people he is referring to are - for example, who is the "Ksenia" he said would be at today's training session? Is she a choreographer? I tried looking the name up, and the only person I could find is a New York-based Russian choreographer/dancer/singer named Ksenia Vidyaykina, but she has never choreographed a skating program before so I really hope Johnny hasn't asked her to do his Olympic year programs. Is there some other Ksenia that maybe he has mentioned before somewhere that I just don't remember? Pippa
