He is moving to New Jersey to train with Viktor Petrenko. Will it be good for Johnny to have another elite male skater training in such close proximity? ETA: I wonder if Viktor will still have some input in Johnny's skating? I read some rumours that Lambiel was considering Brian Orser - but Petrenko? Being also a Lambiel fan I check his forum from time to time - and today they suddenly talk about Petrenko? I now read this info on every major Swiss newspaper, including the Neue Züricher Zeitung (did you know that this is one of the oldest newspapers in the world that is still being printed? Fascinating, isn't it?) - so I guess it's true. I am not just surprised, I am somehow shocked! One of the German articles mentioned Lambiel also being coached by Zmiejevskaja, not just Petrenko. I cannot imagine Johnny and Lambiel training together so closely, it's weird. I am shocked. Sorry, one of the French articles - mixed up my lingos. I think it's a bit unusual to have two high-profile skaters in the same discipline sharing a coach (or coaches, in this case). When was the last time that happened? Plushenko/Yagudin? Johnny and Stephane are not countrymen, so that's a positive. Maybe they will push each other to be better. I really hope that's the case since they are my two favorite men. It'll be interesting to hear what Johnny has to say about this. ~ Brandi ~

I'm generally under the impression Johnny gets along with Stephane, so he might not mind at all. I think it would be more claustrophobic if Galina had decided to start coaching Evan or one of the other US guys. The only time Johnny and Stephane would be apt to face each other competitively would be Worlds, and maybe the odd Grand Prix event or two. Plus the Olympics--it might get a little tense, then, especially if they're both in really good shape and looking to be medal contenders. Otherwise, this might not be a bad thing. Stephane has a wonderful artistic style that I can't help but think would be an inspiration for Johnny. If the the coaches can instill a sense of discipline into Johnny, they can get Stephane back on the right track too. Definitely. Stephane made a good choice, but my feelings are mixed regarding Johnny. After the whole Takahashi/Morosov/Oda thing though, I wouldn't be shocked if Johnny decides to shop around for a new coach. I know that Johnny stated that he crossed off some coaches from his list of consideration last year because he did not want to share coaches with a direct competitor. I sort of hope that somehow all the kinks would be worked out and he will run into the warm loving bosoms of Tarasova again. Otherwise I hope he sticks around. Sharing coaches with Stephane might do him some real good. It could become an inspiration and a motivation. Maybe the two of them will become BFFs! Bunk at Johnny's house, make starbucks runs together, do each others hair, Johnny can give him triple axel tips and Stephane can show Johnny some of his dance moves. I just reread what I wrote and that does not sound right.

I know Johnny and Stephane have always seemed to get along well, and certainly Johnny respects Stephane's skating immensely, but I just can't see him being all that happy about no longer being Galina and Viktor's only elite skater. He spoke of how both of them were at all of his sessions last season, giving him their full attention, and how they were always there for him off the ice, as well. That will be more difficult if they also have Stephane to concentrate on now. Also, just travelling to Stephane's competitions means time away from Johnny, and vice versa. Of course, having Stephane around could also push our very competitive Johnny to even greater heights. I guess we will just have to wait for Johnny's next journal entry to hear his own words on how he feels about all of this!

I almost thought it was a joke when I first saw it... Anyway, I hope for the best and do think it could turn out to be something good for both of them. To have an elite skater on such a high level nearby can be a huge inspiration and push you to work even harder. Besides, didn't Johnny say before in his journal that he wished he could train with Andrei Griazev more but TAT kept separating them? I also sort of remember Stephane mentioned that training by oneself in Switzerland was lonely and he wished he could have some training companions on a similar level in the same rink...... Anyway, I hope for the best (fingers crossed). Johnny is my favorite skater, but Lambiel is a close second. I wish the best for both of them. Maybe Viktor will be the primary coach for Lambiel while Galina will be the primary coach for Johnny? In the May issue of Skating magazine, Johhny says: "Victor is there for every session, helping every day, which is good because Galina is very emotional and Viktor is very steady...They balance each other..." It seems that their training methods are very different. I wonder how this factor will play out later... Woooooow, let me say this again: this is shocking! I also wondered if perhaps Galina would be Johnny's primary coach, while Viktor would be Stephane's. It would help them decide who will attend which competitions. Stephane obviously needs this same kind of change. It remains to be seen whether he will actually follow their training regimen, not take part in other activities (SHOWS), if he will get his triple axel back, if he will remain undistracted by NYC, if he will miss living in Europe, if he will follow his usual pattern and eventually go back to his old coaches..... Overall, I'm concerned but trying to see the possible positive aspects in this situation. Kristina

But that Viktor would still assist with Johnny, etc. Which sounds like it might be an ok arrangement. Maybe. I've always gotten the impression that Stephane and Johnny get along well, so that's a plus, atleast. That IFS quote confuses me because I'm not sure if they're talking about something Johnny said recently, or something he said a year or so ago. So I don't know if that reflects his current opinion or not. I'm definitely anxious to hear what Johnny has to say on this. -Dominique

That will change very soon. "In the US, I will have someone to push me" said Lambiel. Lambiel will train practically next to the elegant American Johnny Weir, Bronze medallist at the last Worlds." That somehow doesn't sound like Johnny is leaving New Jersey - but then again, the whole Takahashi-Oda-Morosov thing sounded amicable at first - till Takahashi announced that he would leave Morosov. We'll see. I still think that's strange. I am not saying that Johnny is a diva - or that Stéphane is a diva - but both of them have been called that, both are known to be artistic and sensitive, both have always enjoyed the attention of full time coaches. Of course, Stéphane could teach Johnny the headless spin and perhaps a better Quad Toe, and Johnny could teach him that fantastic Triple Axel. They could also design costumes together from now on (both of them enjoy doing it), talk about languages (both of them enjoy languages), go shopping together (both list shopping as a hobby) - but I just don't see that coming. I wouldn't be too surprised to read an announcement by Johnny in the following days/weeks about a coaching change. Connaitre, ce n'est point demontrer, ni expliquer. I am afraid that we will soon be hearing about another coaching change from Johnny, which would be such a shame knowing how happy he has been with Galina and Viktor (calling them his "second family", even) and with all that they have done to help his skating. But it is just so very difficult for elite level skaters to share coaches with their top competitors when they are vying for the same goals. Takahashi recently left his coach of three years, Nikolai Morozov, because Morozov took on Nobunari Oda as a student and he just could not share a coach with his competitor. Tim Goebel was fired by coach Frank Carroll when Carroll took on Evan Lysacek (he had promised Goebel that he would have his colleague work primarily with Lysacek so that he could concentrate on Goebel, who was already his student, but when Lysacek began to surpass Goebel on the ice, he fired Tim and became Evan's primary coach). It is all quite nerve-wracking, waiting to hear what Johnny has to say. I just hope he is okay.
