Don't worry, Xrystal - it's not unusual to be shocked by a language when you start with the first unit. It can make you feel pretty dumb, but it'll get better. And you're so right about bad learning material. If I think about that "German greetings" clip that I just watched on youtube ... :12
It's also always easier to read and listen at the same time. The good thing about German (warning, here starts my lecture! ;) ) is that the letter combinations/sounds are very consistent. We don't have such confusing stuff like the English "-ough" letter combination which is pronounced totally different in the words enough, though and plough. That'll make reading a lot easier. :) (See, I'm trying to give you hope.)
I'm not saying German is an easy language (I still remember what I've written somewhere above), and I actually know quite a lot about the difficulties of the German language. But I've also heard about the difficulties in so many other languages, so after all it doesn't matter if you struggle with German or rather with a different language. ;) And I know so many people who have learned German as a foreign language. Hey, you can do it, too. :)
