I really liked what everyone said so far and I couldn't agree more with this here:

Quote:
I think Johnny is conveying very deep and introverted feelings (in lack of a better word), which come across precisely because he is turned inward rather than (superficially) toward the audience.

He has a deep connection with the audience or al least I feel this way and not a "superficial" hey-smile-clap connection. Someone else also said that at some points the audience is just totally quiet (no one wants to break the tense and interrupt these beautiful moments as if teh world stands still) when he takes the ice and that really shows on what level the connection is - it's inside in the soul. If you see him skate you just can't take your eyes away, because it's has something magical. You're completely into it and IMO this connection is much more intensive and real. This connection is build up in a way of "soaking up" his emotions and moves. The most impressive things is that it is not only like that in an arena, but if you watch it on TV you still have this connection (of course it is even more exciting live) - because he doesn't need to look right to you - he looks with his soul and emotions into you and creates this wonderful connection. That's why I never find it boring to watch him. I could just sit there and watch him all the time. His expressions on his face and his amazing aura are an extra plus to this whole things. It's like he's taking you to his world and it's impossible to *run away* - but seriously I would never want to run away from watching him skate.
