When Johnny is skating, it's like a play. He's telling a story and he's the main character. When you go see a play, the characters don't engage the audience. They don't wink at that hot babe in the front row. Johnny may be performing for an audience, the character is not. If he were to connect with the audience in the way they're looking for, I think he would find it distracting. He's just staying in character. He takes you on a journey. He's telling you the story. What more do you want? To most skaters, steps is something they just have to get done (Plush actually said that. It's a quote on his site). We should just be grateful Johnny isn't like that.
