Have I completely missed the big news? Plushenko is actually coming back? What kind of **** is this? Could that be anymore unfair or anymore of a spitball in
the face of those guys who have been busting their asses the past four years?

He's not the only one, rumors surfacing that Michelle Kwan may compete this year as well.

Seriously, that just makes me so angry. I hope they all get their asses handed to them. It won't be the first time for Kwan, either.

Casey...who cares? Lots of skaters come back. It hardly ever works out for them...and if it does, well, then they are still at the top of their game and they
are proving their point. Plushenko thinks he can win by reelling off quads, so be it. We shall see! The last 2 world champs won without quads. They are taking
up space, and preventing other skaters from competing, but there are some advantages (like more public interest). Johnny never seems to mind.
And I did edit your post--pottymouth.

It still bothers me. They haven't earned anything, in my opinion.

It bugs me too, that they can take a few years off being "champions" and then skate back to another title...so they can be champions again. This is
while everyone else is working hard, playing by the rules, etc. But the reality is they almost NEVER achieve that goal. I can't come up with any
stats...but I am not worried about Plushenko because I can't stand his skating. If he wins, it will be because of jumps. Somehow, I don't see it
happening, but what do I know. Anythings possible...and if he wins then there ya go. COP is COP. Maybe the Russian fed coughed up a bunch of $$ for him if
he'd come back.

I think it's mostly the arrogance of it.

I truly think it might be that the federations made it too lucrative for them to ignore. Our girls have no shot and the Russian boys have no shot. So we try to
bring back Cohen and Kwan and they try to bring back Plushy. Politics. It will be a really hard row to hoe for all three of them though. You can't do show
skating for years and then all of a sudden win Olympic gold. And actually, if you think about it, if any of them pulled it off they deserve it because they are
truly great.

I'm on the complete opposite end of the spectrum as Casey :P
If Michelle came back, I would be completely and purely unaduleratedly happy. I'm happy about Sasha coming back, but I'm not a huge fan. I love Plushy to bits, but I love Johnny much more And I might be going a little far afield here, but the whole "older skaters should step out of the way and let the younger skaters have a chance" is my biggest pet peeve basically ever. No one gets a spot at the top handed to them. The younger skaters, if they really are good, can earn their spots the same way the older skaters earned their spots in previous years. No one should have the right to be at the top, whether they're older and have things handed to them because of the name, or younger and they just get it because the better people have stepped out of the way. Whoever is the best in absolute terms deserves to be at the top. If the younger skaters can earn that spot by taking it from the older ones, good for them. If not, they don't deserve it. ^^Sorry for the vehemence lol. Pet peeve, like I said.

I don't care. Time will tell and I think they deserve a chance if the rules allow them to do so. Personally, I am not rooting for any of the come-backs. Of
all of them...Sasha is the one who's skating I most prefer, but they've all been off doing other things and I've kinda lost interest in them. It
will be fun to see them skate but I'm agree, it's a bit nervy to think they can do it again.
After my fav pair, Natalia and Artur retired (actually, they had a comeback, too) and then Artur carried on with Oksana K, then finally retired....I was so sad. What I wanted more than ever was to follow the skaters competitive career, be there in the trenches with them (so to speak)..and rejoice and wallow in their ups and downs. I wanted to see (OK, on tv) them compete, not just do show programs. But I had to love the skater and be truly "vested" in him/them/her. Well, I found that with Johnny.
Knowing Johnny may be headed towards the end of his competitive career (I don't know, of course, just a feeling) is making me a bit despondent.

I kinda agree with Casey. These returning skaters take the spots of the athletes that worked their butts off all these 4 years, while they were touring, or
acting, or simply doing nothing and enjoyed their lives and millions. Plush already had his time, Michelle was always boring and Sasha is probably the most
overrated skater of all time. I fail to see what they could add to the current line-up of skaters. Now we have two spots at SA reserved for Sasha and Michelle,
while there are probably 5 other ladies who deserve that one opportunity 10 times more. Plush goes to Rostelecom Cup, taking up the place of a Russian
skater/Kristoffer Berntsson (who only got 1 assignment this year compared to his 2 assignments all these years... makes you wonder why?). Shen & Zhao come
back too, no idea why. Now all the attention will be focused on them instead of the others who worked hard for that little recognition.

I wouldn't mind if I thought Plushenko would be judged same as all the others. But I don't have that kind of faith. Especially at Rostelecom Cup.
Unless he falls down three times or something, that gold, at least, is his. Doesn't matter if Johnny or anyone else skates better; they'll still hand
it over; I'm convinced of that. And it's all too possible the same will be true at the Olympics. We have a ridiculous amount of strong men's
skaters, all struggling and striving these four years, and now possibly for a contest where the prize will be plucked out of their hands and given to the one
who just strolls in and doesn't really have to beat them. Yeah, I'm furious.

Well, let's wait and see! History shows the come-backers don't usually do well. If nothing else, it will make for a very interesting competition.

If history is correct, there will be some changes to the GP roster before the events actually take place. I have to wonder if all of the "come backs"
really will come back. Unless Pluhsy is convinced he will win, I don't believe he will actually compete. It looks as if Sasha is serious, but if she looks
at where she is in September and doesn't like her chances she could drop out. Who knows about Michelle? Also these guys have not been working in the kind
of rigorous training programs that the others have over the last four years which could make them more stress/injury prone. Who knows? As pairskater said, time
will reveal all....

Has it even been confirmed that Kwan will try for the Olympics? I've heard loads of rumors, but nothing definite. Of the three, I'd say she's the
least likely to succeed, mostly because she's been out of it the longest, and even back in '06, her chances looked pretty dicey.
Cohen's chances, I would also say are no better than 50/50 at this point, just based on her performances in SOI the past two years. I think she has a decent shot at a spot on the US team, mostly because the US ladies are currently pretty weak. But I can't see Cohen medaling at the Olympics unless she skates really, really well and two or three of the other top ladies have a complete meltdown. Plushy, I haven't seen him skate since he retired, so I have no idea what kind of condition he's in. However, I do remember him having injury problems even back when he was competing, and generally speaking age/ time don't do physical problems a lot of favors. It's not impossible, but I can't see it being all easy-peasy for him, either. I do understand the concerns, though, that if he does come back the gold will just be "handed" to him. COP is wonky enough, and any number of judging decisions have been questionable, and there's no doubt that Plushy was a judges' favorite back in the day. But IMO he's still going to have a steep uphill battle to get back into his peak form. Technically, it's going to be no easy thing for him to compete with the current top guys. A lot of his high marks were because of his huge jumps. If he doesn't have the huge jumps, who knows what will happen? At the moment, I'm not stressing about all this--I'm just going to wait and see. --EA Week

Michelle's comeback is not at all confirmed. She has dropped a couple of hints that could be construed as a desire to come back, but it's mostly a
"wait and see" kind of thing. Based on that and on the TBDs from USFSA, as well as the new ISU rule about skater absences, it's a possibility,
but I don't think we'll know for at least another month.

To me I view it in light of who I like which I know is a little self centered and unfair. I LOVE - LOVE - LOVE Michelle Kwan. If she did come back (and I
don't think she will be) I will be in esctasy. I don't care for Plushenko's skating - - one quad jump after another with very little choreography
and he gets those big scores. I sort of like the idea of Sasha coming back.
Now to all of the protesters out there - how would you react if Johnny Weir retires after 2010 and then tries to come back for the 2014 Olympics at the ripe old age of 29? Would we all complain or revel in ectascy? |

I think Johnny will be way too busy being Johnny Weir to stage a comeback. I see bright things in his off-ice future. And I'm sure he'll be at
Sochi...in some capacity. But I will always support him, no matter what he does! I do think, however, that it's in the best interest of the skater to bow
out when the time is right. It just seems a little pathetic to me when past greats try again...and fail. Nothing against them or their efforts...but I wonder
what it's all about. Why do they want to do it?
That said...I don't like it when a skater wins big at a very early age and then bingo! they're gone. (Tara, Sarah..) Is that it? No more? How do you make your mark with one big competition? I'm not a Kimmie Meissner fan, but I give her kudos for not giving up and sticking with it. But perhaps that's why the teenagers who win the Olympics sometimes disappear, they could end up not living up to themselves. I see it as "cashing in" on the medal before it's tarnished. Anyway, I don't care who comes back. Bring 'em on...I think they will be put in their place.
