I want him to do programs that are absolutely and completely Johnny, with sophisticated music (I have been kind of disappointed by the pseudo-classical stuff that sounds as if I could have composed it), unique and exciting choreography, tasteful costumes and a Quad Salchow and a Quad Toeloop. Loads of people on the main figure skating boards are currently debating if he will even make the Olympic Team. I want him to blow the field away. He can be Olympic Champion, but I don't think it's going to happen if he holds back (or recycles old stuff). Go Johnny! Connaitre, ce n'est point demontrer, ni expliquer. The dude defended a National title in the Olympic year last time around. Save for any injuries/unfortunate circumstances, I think he'll be alright. As for programs. I'm hoping for one new and maybe an old one with a new spin, that'd be neat. I kind of hope he doesn't touch The Swan, though. I mean, I love it, of course, but the memories attached to that program all already belong in Torino.

I don't think this is a great idea for the Olympic season - that program is too iconic to the last Olympics, and he received both enormous praise and enormous criticism (mostly for the costume) for it then; it is sure to set off all kinds of comments harking back to that costume and his failure in Torino. But Johnny always does what he wants, so we will just have to wait and hope for the best. Pippa "Keeper of Johnny's love of pomegranate juice"

I loved his Swan but it belongs to past, give it a well deserved rest. Other than that, I'm a bit frustrated that he still in NJ although his programs are started to be made. I was really hoping that he would have took a flight to Toronto to work for example with Wilson or Kawahara. He needs programs that work well with the COP. I would like to see him proving that he can skate COP-friendly programs that have decent choreography. Also, I really hope that Nina Petrenko is out of the picture. I don't want to see her choreography anymore.

Personally, I prefer him to do new programs, or one for new but not the Swan and Otonal which he did it last Olympics. My personal hope is something up-beat music but at the same time, familiar to many people with stylish choreography and it fits under COP, and movements and style are similar to his poker face for his short program. But from seeing it as a competition to win, the selection of the swan music may not be a bad choice even though it's his old program, because judges seem to love the music. For COP friendly program, I thought his The swan was not COP unfriendly seeing the choreography unlike 2007 - 2009's programs. He or Galina will surely change it to be more present COP ( I hope). Besides, the Swan is his favorite program. He may feel comfortable to do it. Financial reason also may be influencing to re-use old program to save money. But if it's not true, and he is just thinking about it as his gala exhibision for his next ice shows, I would be more happy.

I also hope that he will not do the Swan. It is my favourite of all of his programs and the reason I fell in love with his skating and started to follow his career this closely. It is not just that the program was gorgeous, it's the way he performed it in Torino, with so much emotion, intensity and finesse that I do not think that it can be done better than then. For me it was just a perfect moment in time . For him to do a Swan to another music could also be bad since everybody will make the comparisons with the Torino Swan which can only hurt the new program. It would have to be something completely original, like Takahashi's hip-hop Swan lake, to work and for that he will need to have an amazing and innovative choreography and not stick with the Russian ballet style. He must get out of his comfort zone if he is to gain respect of the judges. The last thing he needs is for everyone to say that the program is nice but boring. Last Edited By: nova 05/29/09 3:06 AM. Editing to add: I agree with Nova he needs to get out of his comfort zone. This past season his programs gave me the feeling of stagnation. It felt like he was just floating in his comfort zone without really wanting to come out from there. The last thing he needs now is to reinforce this image and if he would re-use the Swan it would only make the stagnation feel stronger. The Swan program in 2006 was perfect. I loved everything in that program, it was a real master piece. Every time I hear that music it takes me to Johnny-land. For example if another skater uses this music I don't see that skater because in my head I only see Johnny doing his program. Johnny's Swan really had a big impact on me. If he would re-use the program, he would have to update the choregraphy because COP has changed after 2006 but in my books that program was already perfect and I don't want to see that choreography being touched, changed. He is currently coaching the Kerrs, look at their success and popularity with their programs. They were always undermarked with the judges but this last season was a breakout and they finally started to gain the respect of the judges. I don't really care for icedance but I liked them when I saw them in Finlandia Trophy. Their programs were very fresh and bright (if that makes any sense). And yes, Johnny could really benefit if he would work with some of those choreographers. At times it makes me wonder, if he really wants to win world or olympic medals, if he is serious about that. He talks about it but his actions don't allways support that. I mean for example if you look Tomas Verner. Verner's programs in the past haven't allways that good but last season he went to work with Nichol and IMO his free skate was a big step up from previous years. That was a great program and Verner's change proved that he takes his career seriously and tries to improve. That was a professional act to do or at least that's the impression I got and if you compare that choreography to Johnny's free skate, I would say that choreography-wise Verner's program is lightyears ahead of Johnny's. It was more professional program and compared to that Johnny's choreography looked rather amateurish. Sometimes it feels that Johnny lacks that professional attitude, to only work with your friends is not that professional. I wish that Johnny would really take his destiny into his own hands and step up his game, take more responsibility on his own career. After all, he is an adult man.

The main complaint towards Johnny's programs generally on forums always had been that they are repetative, he uses the same movements and elements, often the jump layout is the same (or at least very similar) too. Yes, there is the usual softness and grace in the way he moves on the ice, but other than that, his competitive programs do became stagnant and "boring". I like that you brought up Tomas Verner in comparision, especially because he, too, had many ups and downs in his carrier, yet his programs are very innovative and different. He tends to keep a short or a long program for 2 seasons, but it often occurs nowadays. But he is such a colorful spot on the skating world. A parody program to Toccata and fugue in pink with a silly green ribbon? A serious, mature, very athletic and dramatic program to "Requiem for a dream"? The happy gipsy short program he had last year? The Asian "kung fu"-esque free program (that wasn't that much well recieved, but he still sparked with it)? Or this emotional tango he had last time? All of them are iconic, especially in the European field (as he often struggled on the world stage with them). Apart from being a very lively skater who pours his soul into all of his programs in a different way, he is also a very athletic person, with gorgeous skating skills and amazing jumping and spinning ability (not to mention his footworks). That was actually my first thought. No matter what he does, though, he's bound to end up disappointing some people. I mean, just look at the differing opinions on this board alone. In the end, there really is no sense in trying to please others, just yourself. And if this is to be his final competitive season, and this theme is something that he misses and is close to his heart, he should get to revisit it, any of our opinions be damned. But, twitter is for cryptic one-liners, so I woudn't start drawing conclusions just yet.

I don't think I can agree with this. There is nothing wrong with his style, and I don't really see the need to change anything about his natural skating style in order to win. If he skates well and rocks it, he deserves to win regardless of whether he does ballet or hip hop or whathaveyou. (At least in my perfect world. ) After all, that style is part of why I (and many others) love him, and nobody currently skates quite like him.

Senior Angel Posts: 62 (05/29/09 10:09 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	You misunderstood me Reet, I like "Johnny's style", I just thought that the judges might feel that Russian ballet type of choreography is the only one that he feels comfortable with and that he lacks variety. Sorry, but since I'm not a native speaker of English I sometimes find it difficult to express myself. Actually, I stated in that same post that the Swan is my favorite Johnny's program and it is the epitome of the Russian ballet style. As far as I'm concerned he can do it over and over again but the idea is for him not to please us, hard core fans, but to stand out among the other also great and hungry skaters and win the Olympic medal.
