Johnny's name floated for Dancing with the Stars (Artilcle) |
Lead | |

9. Johnny Weir -- Another name from the People magazine wish list that makes sense, since Weir is a three-time U.S. figure skating champion and was one of the
stars of the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Torino, Italy. A perfect follow-up to Kristi Yamaguchi's fabulous performance in Season 6.

I agree, but hopefully not before the close of the 2010 Olympics. Johnny needs to be focused. Then he can blow the world away on two fronts!

Wouldn't Johnny loose his olympic eligiblity if he took Dancing with the stars?

brigichan wrote:No - Olympic speed skater Apollo Anton Ono won Dancing With The Stars a few seasons ago and is still Olympic eligible. The old rules about athletes having to stay "amateur" and not earn money from their sport in order to compete at the Olympics are pretty much gone (although since dancing is not the same thing as skating, they probably never would have applied in this case anyway). So many countries were using professional athletes in the team sports and finding ways around the rules that the IOC just got rid of the "amateur" status rule. Nowadays you see basketball and soccer players who earn megamillions of dollars competing at the Olympics, for example. Pippa

ITA with sk8tingfan. I'm not advocating that Johnny take on big non-skating commitments -- certainly not during the skating season! This year will be his
best and possibly last chance to make to the top and I hope and trust he won't lose his focus. I posted the article because it's flattering that
he's considered and promoted for it. That's all. Johnny was born to skate, and as far as I'm concerned that's what he needs to do. Anything
else, at the appropriate time, is icing on the cake.

But Johnny needs also money to support his training. How can he stay focused without knowing how to pay everyone and everything?
Maybe it turns out to be good for him. Plus, in the off season e.g. he has enough time for both, training and a show, IMO. Or am I too naive on this? |

I like him being called a "star of the '06 Olympics". See guys, a couple bad performances mean nothing in the larger scheme of things. He's
destined to be a household name. He would be a ton of fun at DWTS but I think he should wait at least till summer '10.

I don't know if Dancing With the Stars would be willing to take on another skater; Kristi was often called a "ringer" and there is a general
belief(whether it's true or not) that her skating background gave her an unfair advantage. At the very least, they might want to wait a few more seasons.
Which is just as well, since Johnny probably wouldn't be doing this until at least the fall of 2010.

I seriously doubt that Johnny would do DWTS, even after the Olympics. I remember that he was once asked if he would consider doing one of those "Skating
with Celebrities" shows, and he said no, he wouldn't enjoy having to perform with a partner.
Anyway, he probably wouldn't be asked on by the producers unless he first won Olympic gold - all of the athletes who have been on DWTS so far have been major champions like football stars who have won the Super Bowl (Kristi Yamaguchi, Apollo Anton Ono and Misty May-Treanor are the 3 Olympians who have been on so far, and all were Olympic gold medalists). I have thought before about Johnny being on DWTS, and I believe it would be great!
But if you all really think he shouldn't because he needs to focus more on his
training for Olympics, I understand. Still, the thought of him being another Apolo Anton Ohno and Kristi Yamaguchi.... |
